YAZ (Yasmin) and Ocella Side Effects

What is YAZ?

YAZ is a type of combination oral contraceptive (COC) that contains both estrogenic and progestational components to prevent pregnancy. Yasmin and YAZ were approved for marketing in 2001 and 2006, respectively. In addition to acting as a birth control pill that is 99% effective if used as directed, YAZ  marketing campaigns also claim that this drug may help treat symptoms of PMDD and moderate acne. YAZ claims to go “beyond birth control”.

PMDD stands for premenstrual dysphoric disorder, a condition characterized by severe emotional and physical premenstrual symptoms such as anxiety, depression, loss of appetite, anger, headaches, change in appetite, and more. 

What are some of the side effects that have been reported as a result of YAZ?

YAZ may have any of a number of different side effects, ranging from mild to severe. Mild side effects may include: acne, weight gain, fatigue, and increased appetite. Serious side effects may include: stroke, heart attack, liver disease, pulmonary embolism, kidney failure, blood clot, gallbladder disease, liver tumor, and even death.
